CENTURY OF INFLUENCE

2022

Book cover, interior content and layout design. A Century of Influence contains designed spread layouts, and information about eighteen graphic designers from the 20th century.

For the cover design and title spread, I went back to basic design elements and focused on color, shape, and line. I came up with this concept by thinking of the basic elements that tie together a century’s worth of design work, and utitlize these elements to create a design that encapuslates the variety of work found in the book. I wanted the typography to interact with the shapes to convey the theme of breaking the rules and thinking outside of the boxes and boundaries. The color choice was a play on RGB color, I strayed from the standard HEX values to again push forward this theme.

For this project, I created a handmade hard cover hand bound book.
This process included printing all of the designer spreads, arranging, gluing, sewing the spine, followed by printng, mounting, and attaching the hard cover.

The final bound book was featured in two exhibitions at the Western Michigan University Frostic School of Art,
the 2023 Annual Student Exhibition and the 2024 “Terminals” Graphic Design BFA Exhibiton.

The Interior spreads featured eighteen different designers from the twentieth century. My spreads were focused on type designer Zuzana Licko. For this section, I researched and wrote an article about Zuzana and created a layout design too fit inside a four page spread. The challenege for me was finding the best way to incorperate her typography design skills, while also featuring the beautiful variety of layouts in Emigre Magazine.  To begin, I set the type in “Mr. Eaves”, a sans serif font designed by Zuzana.  I also used fonts designed by her in the title page. The color palette was pulled from the “Program” composition in Emigre by Rudy VanderLans. I pulled from there to create unity between his type  composition I wanted to feature, and the article layout itself.
